With the 100th playing of Osceola and St. Cloud occurring on the OHS gridiron Friday, it’s a good time to look at what the local high-schoolers of yesteryear are doing for today’s students.
Last week, the alumni group from the Osceola High Class of 1976 donated $1,150 to the OHS Math Department to use on needed supplies.
The 1976ers, the selfdescribed “Bicentennial class,” holds a reunion every five years.
“At each one of those, we have an auction,” said Class of ’76 member Tammi Madison. “Each auction, we select a school group and donate that money back to OHS. Before that, it was the Science Club, and before that it was the Kowboy Kloset. We want to support the next generation of those running this country.”
The math department is one close to Madison’s class, she said. Susan Ferguson was a longtime OHS math teacher, before recently retiring, and her husband Mark is a member of the Class of ’76.
“My husband and our children are OHS graduates, and they gave me an honorary diploma when I retired,” Ferguson said with a laugh. “So everyone in the house is from OHS, although I tell people it took me over 30 years to get mine.”
OHS math coach Breanna Wilkerson said the funds will be used to purchase personal white boards for students, along with other supplies to enhance student engagement.
“Because of this, we’ll be able to reach a higher level of hands-on learning,” she said. “We’re really excited to have been chosen.”
