Cop sentenced to 22.5 years in George Floyd murder

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was sentenced to 22 and a half years in prison Friday.  Chauvin was convicted earlier this year of the second-degree unintentional murder of George Floyd, who was handcuffed facedown on the ground while Chauvin kneeled on his throat during an arrest.

First Lady, Dr. Fauci visit Kissimmee to promote vaccine

First Lady Jill Biden and Dr. Anthony Fauci came to Kissimmee Thursday to encourage more people to get the COVID-19 vaccine as demand tapers off.  Along with U.S. Rep. Darren Soto, D-Kissimmee, touted the vaccine as safe, effective and free.  About 56% of Floridians have gotten at least one shot.

Kissimmee man arrested while speaking with News-Gazette staff

It’s a rare occasion when we, the Osceola News-Gazette, are part of the stories we tell.  But today was such a day.  About 2:30 p.m. a man called the newsroom asking to speak with someone about problems he’s having regarding custody of his 2-year-old daughter.

Special needs home rises from ashes

In the very early hours of February 2020, the call rang out in Saint Cloud Fire Station 31 for a house fire at 900 Alabama Avenue, just seven short blocks from the station. That address was the home of Gail Foster and 11 others, a refuge to care for those with special needs, including six children.

Now a federal holiday, Juneteenth festival draws crowds in Kissimmee

Juneteenth became the 12th federal holiday last week after winning support from Congress and President Joe Biden. A combination of the words June and 19th, Juneteenth commemorates the liberation of enslaved people in the U.S.
