Plans publicly presented for Turnpike project

Project includes new full interchange at U.S. 192 near St. Cloud

Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise, part of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), is widening a one and half-mile section of Florida’s Turnpike from U.S. 192 to Partin Settlement Road in Osceola County.

Plans for the project were introduced to the public during a virtual meeting held on June 8 and an in-person meeting at the St. Cloud Community Center on June 11.

In addition to adding two new lanes in each direction, expanding the roadway from four lanes to eight lanes, the project will construct additional entrance and exit ramps at the existing northbound U.S. 192 interchange near St. Cloud Commons. The project fills the gap between two turnpike widening projects occurring both north and south of this project area.

With this planned expanded interchange, the St. Cloud area will gain three new or expanded turnpike access points: at U.S. 192, Nolte Road to replace the Clay Whaley interchange and just north of the Canoe Creek Service Plaza at the future Southport Connector intersection.

The project is currently in the design phase, but Right of Way acquisition is also in progress. Two new traffic signals on U.S 192, one on either side of the Turnpike overpass, are part of the project. Potential noise/visual barrier walls parallel to Patricia Street to the west and along the ponds adjacent to Willett Way and Sherman Street to the east are being evaluated. Several new retention ponds for the expanded roadway will be located between the Turnpike and Simmons Road, as well as south of U.S. 192 and west of the Turnpike. Construction is not expected to be completed until 2031.

Comments on the project can be submitted until June 25. For more information on the projects, and to submit comments, see https://bit.ly/4fKrlny.
