It's Gopher Tortoise Day — get involved in conservation

April 10 is celebrated as Gopher Tortoise Day. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) invites you to celebrate by getting involved in conservation efforts with our state’s only native tortoise, a state-listed Threatened Species.

Holopaw Ranch part of Florida Wildlife Corridor

The Florida Cabinet has approved funding for the permanent conservation of 21,063 acres across five properties within and adjacent to the Florida Wildlife Corridor. Holopaw Ranch in northeast Osceola County makes up over 4,000 acres of it.

Did you know we have a place to immerse yourself in native American history right on our own backyard? The Jororo Native Village, located at 2001 E. Southport Road, is a full-scale history village which depicts how one family would have lived in the headwaters of the Everglades 500 years ago.

2023: a celebration of 15 at Aquatica

Happy 15th birthday, or anniversary, to Aquatica, Sea World’s water park. Later this summer, the park will show off new features, including an updated shallow splash and slide area for kids, and have special events leading into the summer and fall.

Finding Roseate Spoonbills

For many years, I have loved the beautiful Roseate Spoonbill, which is actually a water bird. Since I never found one anywhere nearby, I sometimes traveled to Sanibel Island to watch them hunt the mudflats there. Since then, spoonbills have been gradually increasing their numbers, and their range.

The Antique and Modern Fire Apparatus Show and flea market to be held at the Osceola County Fire Training Center in Kissimmee on Saturday, April 1 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. has been canceled, per the Florida Antique Bucket Brigade. But, there's still fun to be had around town Saturday!

The 40th Annual Spring Fling presented by the Rotary Club of St. Cloud will be held on Friday, March 3 from 5-10 p.m. at the St. Cloud Lakefront. Starting at dusk (8 p.m.) the movie Lightyear will be shown. Bring chairs and blankets! Food trucks and popcorn will be onsite.
