DISTRICT SOCCER — Lady Longhorns win on PK; Storm boys dominant

Gateway boys fall to Innovation

Note: The FHSAA regional brackets for next week's playoffs are slated to be released Friday.

TUESDAY (GIRLS): HARMONY 1, CELEBRATION 0

In a tense District 7A-7 showdown Tuesday, Harmony High School's girls' soccer team proved once again why they've been the district champions for five consecutive years, defeating host Celebration High on a second-half penalty kick.

Despite Celebration's home-field advantage and strong senior leadership, they couldn't break through Harmony's formidable defense. The Lady Storm, who last defeated Harmony in the Orange Belt Conference championship two years ago—entered the match with momentum and a superior season record.

The first half was a defensive battle, with both teams holding firm to a 0-0 deadlock. Celebration controlled possession for significant stretches but struggled to convert their attacks into meaningful scoring opportunities against Harmony's disciplined defensive unit.

The decisive moment came in the 67th minute when a Harmony cross led to a handball in the penalty area by a Celebration defender. Gabriella Guzman stepped up to take the penalty kick and delivered a powerful shot that found the back of the net, giving Harmony the only goal they would need.

Despite renewed pressure from Celebration in the closing minutes, Harmony's defense remained impenetrable, forcing shots wide and stifling the Lady Storm's attacking efforts in securing the district championship.

With the win Harmony advances to the regional playoffs — and the Storm are slated to join them based on their state computer ranking.

TUESDAY (BOYS): INNOVATION 1, GATEWAY 0. The Bulls' Julian Hernandez scored in the second half and the first-year school made it stand up as the top-seeded Panthers (16-2) fell in an upset.

Gateway will still likely find itself in the regional playoffs when the brackets are announced Friday, and may even host a regional quarterfinal on Tuesday.

WEDNESDAY (BOYS): CELEBRATION 6, HARMONY 0:

Ever since Celebration lost to Gateway five weeks ago in a shootout at the Orange Belt Conference tournament finals, Storm assistant coach Chad Boudreaux said his team has been laser-focused and on a mission.

That mission continued Wednesday as the Storm blasted host-Harmony, 6-0, to win the District 7A-7 championship.  The Storm has now won six in a row and has outscored the opposition 27-1 in the process.

Now 13-3-1 and ranked third in Region 2, the Storm will most likely host at least one home game when the tournament field is announced later this week.

“Not really sure how the rankings will settle out after district play,” Boudreaux said.  “Talent-wise there is very little separating the top six teams in the region.  I think we’re looking pretty good for at least one home game.”

Deep runs in the postseason are nothing new to the Storm.  Over the last four seasons they have gone 49-10-11, have won four consecutive district titles and made it to the regional finals two of the last three years.

Wednesday night was more of the same.  About 20 minutes into the game, Victor Mora took a long pass over the middle, beat the last defenseman to the ball, deftly moved the ball past a charging goalie and buried in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. A few minutes later, Pedro Moreira made it 2-0 firing a left-footed shot into the net past goalie Ryan Schadeck.

Harmony had its best chance to get back in the game after Moreira’s goal, but Storm goalie Alex Morales made a sensational block of a Harmony free kick.  The Longhorns blasted the rebound toward the net but a Storm defender cleared the ball away.

“I never feel comfortable with a two goal lead,” Boudreaux said.  “I always consider it a dangerous score because if you give one up, it makes it a one score game and can push all the momentum to the other side.  Whenever we get up 2-0, I am always pushing our guys to try to get another one.”

His team got one with time running down in the first half. Joao Pedro-Oliveira took a pass on the left side and lofted a soft shot over Schadeck’s outstretched hands to make it 3-0 at the half. That score kept all the momentum on Celebration’s side as it dominated possession and field position for the entire second half.

Harmony briefly had a chance to get back in the game but the Longhorns sent an open shot just wide of the net and then had a goal disallowed for an off-sides. After that brief rally, the Storm emphatically shut the door with two more quick scores. Abraham Badillo-Santana chipped one in after a Harmony misplay of the ball Mora scored his second goal of the game – blasting in a rebound off a corner kick. A foul in the final minute resulted in Badillo-Santana scoring his second goal on a penalty kick.

THURSDAY (BOYS): OSCEOLA AT BARTOW

After 11-0 and 4-3 wins over Lakeland and Lake Gibson last week, the Kowboys (11-6) will play Bartow Thursday for the District 6A-7 championship Thursday in a game delayed by weather last week and stadium issues this week.
