Deputies continue investigation into Remington home shooting; 85-year-old man arrested

Osceola County Sheriff's deputies continue to investigate the circumstances behind a Friday shooting at a home in the Remington subdivision that left one man hospitalized and his elderly father in jail on weapons charges.

Billy Leroy Barr, 84, was arrested following a shooting at the Westmoreland Circle home he shares with his son and charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, shooting into/within an occupied dwelling and improper exhibition of a firearm.

Deputies responded to the home — for the third time in 10 days — just before 1 p.m. Friday afternoon after receiving a 911 call from a 51-year-old man stating that he had been shot by his father in the garage. The shooting victim was airlifted to a hospital where he underwent surgery for his injuries. The father, later identified as Barr, was taken into custody without incident.

For a time during the afternoon, investigators worked to determine whether to place Barr, who police said Friday has been diagnosed with dementia, under arrest or in care at a mental health facility under the Baker Act, Osceola Sheriff's spokesperson Capt. Kim Montes said Friday.
