Despite Dagur Thórhallsson's early goal, Lions fall; could end up in MLS playoffs "play-in" game

Orlando City SC's Latin Heritage Night celebration ended in disappointment Saturday as the Lions fell 2-1 to the Western Conference-leading Vancouver Whitecaps at Inter&Co Stadium, despite playing with a severely depleted roster due to international duty call-ups.
While most MLS teams enjoyed a bye week to rest and regroup, Orlando was forced to field a makeshift lineup missing six players away with their national teams: defenders David Brekalo and Alexander Freeman, midfielder Colin Guske, goalkeeper Javier Otero, and attackers Marco Pašalić and Tyrese Spicer. The Lions' bench featured multiple second-team players as head coach Oscar Pareja worked with limited resources. Vancouver also had absences, but countered with World Cup winner Thomas Müller, whose experience and quality proved decisive in the match's closing moments.
The undermanned Lions showed remarkable resilience early, striking first in the 24th minute. Forward Duncan McGuire, who had entered as a substitute just six minutes earlier after defender Robin Jansson suffered an injury in the 18th minute, delivered a headed assist to Icelandic right back Dagur Thórhallsson. The 24-year-old finished clinically with his right foot on a fast break, slotting past Vancouver goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka into the bottom right corner to send the home crowd into celebration.
Peruvian goalkeeper Pedro Gallese kept Orlando in front with a series of spectacular saves throughout the match, denying five Vancouver attempts including efforts from Sebastian Berhalter, J.C. Ngando, and Édier Ocampo. But substitute Nelson Pierre equalized in the 81st minute when the ball deflected off Orlando defender Kyle Smith and crossed the line after Berhalter's shot hit the post.
In stoppage time, Müller collected a pass from Ryan Gauld at the edge of the box and unleashed a left-footed strike into the bottom right corner in the 97th minute, silencing the home crowd. The Lions will travel to Toronto FC next Saturday, October 18, at 6:00 PM for the regular season finale. The three points at stake are crucial in determining Orlando's final playoff position and could significantly impact how far the team must travel for their opening playoff match. With all six players returning from international duty, Orlando will have a full-strength squad ready to compete for a better postseason seed next Saturday in Toronto.
