109 (!!) athletes advancing to regional meets; two dozen won district championships
It was a big weekend for local high school track teams, as three county teams sprinted their way to district championships.
Over at Viera on Friday, the St. Cloud boys’ team dominated the District 4A-7 meet, winning the team title with 151 points. Harmony (71) was fourth, Poinciana (69) was fifth followed by Tohopekaliga (63) in seventh and Osceola (43) ninth.
In the girls 4A-7 meet, Harmony (135) held on to defeat St. Cloud (134) by a single point – flipping the script after the Bulldogs edged Harmony in last week’s OBC Championships. Osceola (89) was fourth, Tohopekaliga (73) fifth and Poinciana (47) seventh.
Gateway’s boys (217) ran away with the District 3A-7 meet at Lake Region High. Liberty (27) was seventh. Gateway (97) was fourth in the girls meet with Zephyrhills (148) winning the team title.
The county saw multiple district champions. In the 4A-7 boys meet, Harmony’s Mekhi Ealy (44’-7”) won the shot put, Jaylen Cobb (131’-6”) won the discus and Ivan Ramos (161’-3”) won the javelin.
St. Cloud posted two championships: Mason Shafer won the pole vault (12’-11 ½”) and Denzel Hawkins (58.44) won the 400 meter hurdles. The Bulldogs were dominate in the relays as they took first in the 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 events and also qualified for regionals in the 4 x 100 with a third place finish.
Poinciana led all 4A county schools with four individual district championships as Levi Lee won both the 800 (1:58.69) and 1600 meter runs (4:24.73) and Tyler Johnson took the long jump (21’-7 ½”) and Chazden Hill the triple jump (44’-5 ¼”).
In the girls’ 4A-7 meet, Osceola County saw its athletes win 10 individual titles. Harmony’s Nicole Olivera (12.29) won the 100; while St. Cloud had four district winners with Kyla Perez (2:24.71) in the 800, Joy Duncan (5’-1 ¾”) in the high jump, Jayden Brown (115’-0”) in the discus and Brooke Bonesteel in the pole vault (9’-0 ¼”).
Osceola posted three district champions with Norlena Forde winning the 400 (1:00.34), Aaliya Strachen taking the long jump (17’-11”) and Cheyene Price taking gold in the triple jump (34’-3 1/4”). Tohopekaliga’s Sofia Delgado won both the shot put and javelin.
It was the “Jose Calderon Show” in the boys 3A-7 meet. The Gateway soccer and track star and 2024 All-State performer in the 400 meters, won three gold medals on Saturday – winning both the 200 (21.59) and 400-meter (48.16) sprints; while also running a winning leg on the 4 x 400 relay team. His shot at four championships fell short when he was disqualified for a false start in the 100 meters.
Four Panthers won individual district titles in the field events with Dory Thimote (5’-11 ½” winning the high jump, Dalton Gould (12’6”) taking the pole vault, Alijah Stewart (16.40) winning the 110 meter hurdles, and Joseph Ramirez-Sanchez taking the top spot in the long jump (21’-11 ¾”). Sarah Diaz (7’-10 ½”) won the girls pole vault.
