POINCIANA NEWS - Southport Connector workshop next week

The Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) is hosting an Alternative Public Workshop for the Southport Connector Expressway Project Development & Environment (PD&E) Study. This proposed 15-mile Expressway would extend from Poinciana Poinciana through Cypress Parkway and connect to Florida Turnpike and Canoe Creek Road.

Resident input is important. Share your thoughts, ask questions and learn more about the proposed plans to improve local travel and relieve traffic congestion in the Poinciana area.

Workshop details: virtual meeting—Tuesday, March 11 from 6-7:30 p.m. (For the virtual meeting, register at www.bit.ly/4kbLKBw); in-person meeting — Thursday, March 13 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in two locations—Poinciana Community Center, 445 Marigold Ave. (exhibits and staff interactions) and the Anthony DePalma Event Center, 395 Marigold Ave. (looping presentation). The in-person meeting will be an open house format—drop-in at any time to view exhibits, ask questions and share your feedback.

Applications are available now for the 2025 Poinciana Council Scholarship. This year, the Poinciana Council Board of Directors will award (at minimum) two $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors who reside in the 34758, 34759 or 34746 zip codes and two more to students already enrolled in a technical education program, two or fouryear degree program or Masters program at a post-secondary educational institution.

All winners will be honored at a luncheon at Poinciana High School on Tuesday, Apr. 22.

 

Celebrate the strength and energy of being a woman! In honor of Women’s Day, Zumba Fitness will hold a special event full of fun, dance and positive energy hosted by Maria Santacruz. This special Women’s Day event will be held on Saturday, March 8 at 8:30 a.m. at the APV Fitness Center (397 Marigold Ave.)

The Moffit Cancer Center Wellness Series takes place at the Library on Friday, March 7 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Learn prevention tips that can help you reduce your risk of cancer, early detection and screening and local resources available. Presented by Christian Church, this month’s topic is Breast cancer.

Conversational Spanish takes place at the Library on Friday, Mar. 7 from 3-4 p.m. Engage with other speakers to practice your Spanish and improve your confidence and vocabulary. Basic Spanish skills are required.

Create a masterpiece using recycled magazines as your paint and brush at the Makers Café: Women’s History Abstract Collage on Saturday, Mar. 8th from 2 to 4 p.m. while learning about women who helped shape the abstract art movement. Supplies will be provided.
