5 A.M. update: Milton's center exiting Brevard; over 27,000 out of power in Osceola

Curfew remains in effect until 10 a.m.

THURSDSAY 5 A.M.: Milton is hanging on as a Category 1 hurricane with top winds of 85 mph as the center has reached Brevard County. But the winds continue to blow.

A wind gust of 76 mph was recorded overnight by a Kissimmee weather station, and other WeatherSTEM stations recorded regular gusts near 70 mph through the night, The station at Osceola Heritage Park recorded a pressure reading of 979 millibars, which corresponds to a robust Category 1 hurricane, around 1 a.m. Winds continue to blow up to 50-60 mph around the area. STAY WITHIN THE SAFETY ON INDOORS -- a county-wide curfew is in effect until 10 a.m. Winds should drop to around 25 mph, out of the north, by 11 a.m.

Between KUA, OUC and Duke Energy, about 27,000 utility customers are out of power. Crews will not be able to get out and make repairs until winds subside to below 40 or 45 mph.

Those customers who are out are part of about 3.1 million others statewide currently without power.
