NeoCity Academy named a National Blue Ribbon School

The U.S. Department of Education Monday recognized 356 schools as 2024  National Blue Ribbon Schools, including Kissimmee’s NeoCity Academy, which was nominated among Exemplary High Performing Schools.

This prestigious recognition highlights schools that excel in academic performance or make significant strides in closing achievement gaps among different student groups,” the U.S. Department of Education said in its announcement release.

NeoCity Academy opened in the fall of 2019 as a STEM-focused project-based school in a LEED green facility that uses 76% less energy than other school buildings, themed to integrate science and technology into students’ everyday lives.

“The National Blue Ribbon Schools Award is a testament to the exceptional achievements of students and educators at each of these schools,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. “The 2024 National Blue Ribbon Schools are raising the bar for our nation’s students, serving as models for effective teaching and intentional collaboration in their schools and communities. As we celebrate their achievements, let us look to these schools for inspiration as we champion education as the foundation of a brighter future for every child.”

On its award page, the National Blue Ribbon Schools committee noted NeoCity was, “Founded under the belief that a school where students own their learning is fundamentally more impactful than one where they do not … NeoCity Academy is actively engaging students in inquiry-driven, project-based learning to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of graduating students ready to change the world.”

“Authentic, standards-based grading empowers students to prioritize learning and advocate for themselves, preparing them for college … The campus, designed to mirror a college environment, features breakout rooms with advanced technology, engineering and bio labs, and learning spaces, all encouraging students to take ownership of their education.”

The school touts a 14-to-1 student-classroom teacher ratio, 100% graduation rate, an average SAT score of 1230, and 80% of graduates accepted into four-year colleges and earning millions of dollars in scholarships since its “launch class” graduated in 2022. It does this while mimicking the cultural diversity of the area – 63% of students are Hispanic.

To highlight the rigorous work done by NeoCity students, its English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum encompasses honors courses for freshmen and sophomores, all juniors are enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP) Language and Composition, followed by AP Literature and Composition for seniors.

“NeoCity Academy is more than a school,” the awards page reads. “It is a catalyst for change, preparing students to make a transformative impact on the world.”
