The aftermath of a hurricane can bring about many challenges, from property damage to electrical shortages. Here in Central Florida, where hurricane season can be notoriously unpredictable, what you might not have thought of is potential pest invasions and taking the proactive measures to prevent tiny intruders from taking over your home.

Here are some essential tips homeowners can take to help safeguard their home before and after a storm:

Inspect and reinforce

Begin by inspecting the openings around your home. Check window screens for tears and ensure they fit snugly into the frames, denying entry to unwanted guests. Homeowners should also examine soffits, gable vents, ridge vents and vent stacks to confirm they are properly sealed, preventing rodents and squirrels from infiltrating your attic.

Seal doors and threshold

Make sure all doors are properly sealed at the threshold and the weather stripping is in good shape. This simple step can significantly reduce the likelihood of pests finding their way indoors.

Clear gutters and debris

Keep gutters clear of leaf debris to prevent water accumulation, which can attract pests like mosquitoes. Additionally, remove any storm debris or vegetative materials that may have accumulated around your property, as they can make the perfect hiding spot for pests.

Maintain termite defenses

Pay special attention to termite prevention. If soil has covered termite bait stations or eroded away from your home’s foundation, contact professionals for inspection and potential re-treatment. Missing bait stations or caps should also be addressed promptly to prevent termite infestations.

While making sure your home is safe against pests, it’s equally crucial to tend to your lawn’s well-being in the aftermath of a storm. Hurricanes tend to leave dense piles of debris on the grass which can lead to significant damage, potentially causing injury or death to the grass. Be sure you are following local guidelines regarding debris disposal, stacking it away from your lawn as directed. Additionally, be attentive in clearing debris from irrigation systems to prevent drought stress and consider pruning damaged branches from trees and shrubs to promote healthy growth.

As hurricane season approaches, taking these proactive measures can mitigate the risk of pest infestations and preserve the integrity of your home and lawn in the aftermath of a hurricane. Stay vigilant, stay prepared, and remember that professional assistance is always available if needed.
