The Osceola Library System is going back to its roots and leaving late fines behind!
On Oct. 1, local libraries returned to being fine-free after charged fines for overdue materials since October 2011. In addition to not charging overdue fines on print materials going forward, all past overdue fines will be cleared, giving everyone a fresh start in using the libraries.
Most Library programs and services are free of charge, and library officials say eliminating late fines will open access to TechCentral, hotspots, Chromebooks, Career Online High School, STEAM kits, Launchpads and other essential and innovative collections and services that need a Library card in good standing to access.
“Eliminating overdue fines will help us focus on providing better service to our patrons,” said Library Director Amy Jones. “It will give us more time to spend doing important things like helping children discover a love of reading, teaching citizens new technologies and creating a welcoming and helpful environment for all.”
The Library has added millions of online titles in collections such as eBooks, eAudio, streaming media and research and learning resources that don’t incur overdue fines. Over the years, and especially since the pandemic, revenue from overdue fines has continued to drop, creating minimal impact to the library budget when compared with the cost of managing fines. Eliminating fines ensures all Library resources are offered equally with consistent policies and procedures.

I look forward to this new chapter of our Library serving residents.”
The library system trusts patrons will continue to return physical materials to libraries on time. Current checkout policies will remain in place. Patrons will still have ample opportunity to finish reading their materials so they can bring them back and let the next person enjoy them as much as they did. Any materials that are lost or never returned will be charged the full replacement value and patron privileges blocked until the items are returned. Just bring them back and the patron will be clear to find their next favorite title!
The Osceola Library System joins other library systems in the country and Florida that have eliminated overdue fines.
