Storm, Tigers boys make state cross country; swimmers await at-large state bids

Several athletes and teams from Osceola County competed in regional action over the weekend. In the Class 3A, Region 3 meet, both Celebration (10th) and Harmony (12th) were eliminated from the state championship meet; teams needed a top eight finish to move on.

Boca Raton’s Emma O’Day won the 5K race in 18:26, but Osceola County will advance two individual runners to the state meet as Celebration’s Catalina Edwards (19:12) and Harmony’s Leilana Decker (19:31) finished fifth and eighth respectively to earn at-large berths.

In the boys’ race, both Tohopekaliga (5th- 1:26.15 total time) and Celebration (8th – 1:28.14) both advance to the state championship next week in Tallahassee.

Toho placed three runners in the top 15 with Johan Comacho (6th-16:08), Zaniel Lizardo (10th-16:23) and Javan Medina (13th-16:30). Evan Amaya led Celebration with a 12th place finish in 16:26; while Harmony’s Joel Jean earned an at-large spot in the state finals with a 14th place finish overall (16:33.4).

In swimming, the Harmony boys’ (71 points) and Longhorn girls’ (51 points) each finished in 14th place in the Class 4A, Region 2 meet at Olympia High School. The top two finishers in each event advance to the state championship; while the next 12 best performances across the state also advance. The Longhorns has no automatic qualifiers and now must wait when the at-large qualifiers are announced. Sarina Steele is most likely to qualify in the 100 freestyle with her third place finish in 24.63; while Nick Vishudanand may also have a shot with a fourth place finish in the 1-meter dive.

Celebration’s teams finished 18th (girls) and 19th (boys) in the Region 3 Championship at East Lake High School and saw its season come to an end, as did Osceola boys (20th overall).
