An Osceola County federal Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) will open Sunday in Kissimmee as a one-stop-shop for local individuals and businesses recovering from the devastating impacts of Hurricane Ian.
The site, much like those opened in southwest Florida to help survivors there, will be at the Hart Memorial Library in downtown Kissimmee (211 W. Dakin St.), and will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week.
Some of the services that the DRC provides include:
- Guidance regarding disaster recovery assistance and programs for survivors
- Clarification of any written correspondence received from FEMA
- Housing assistance and rental resource information
- Answers to questions, resolution to problems and referrals to agencies that may provide further assistance
- Status of applications being processed by FEMA
- Small Business Administration (SBA) program information regarding assistance
Registration is the first step, and requires information such as insurance policies, and bank information for possible direct transfer of funds. If you are visiting the DRC for the first time, you are asked to register.
To do so, and if phone and/or internet access, you may register online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov, or call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362. Help is available in most languages and phone lines are open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) seven days a week until further notice. If you are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a speech disability and use a TTY, call 800-462-7585.
Residents who previously registered for assistance do not need to visit the DRC, but can ask questions or seek further information in person at the DRC in addition to online or by phone.
One of the services residents can sing up for at the DRC is the Transitional Sheltering Assistance (TSA) Program, which has been activated by FEMA in "impacted counties" -- which includes Osceola. Impacted residents may be eligible to shelter in a hotel or motel paid for by FEMA. They may be eligible for TSA if they cannot return to their home and their housing needs cannot be met by insurance, shelters or rental assistance provided by FEMA or another agency (federal, state or nonprofit).
“Many Floridians lost their homes in the blink of an eye,” said FDEM Director Kevin Guthrie. “Activating the Transitional Sheltering Assistance Program is just another step in the long line of actions we will continue to take to ensure we are easing Floridians’ recovery processes as much as possible. We encourage every impacted resident to apply for Individual Assistance, and every eligible individual to utilize TSA.”
