Through their annual collaborative effort, Osceola County Fire Rescue & EMS, the City of Kissimmee Fire Department and the St. Cloud Fire Rescue Department hope to see a lot of green and little to no red this holiday season.
The goal of the digital Keep the Wreath Green is to remind residents of the importance of fire safety through the holidays. The wreath, lit initially by all green bulbs, will light one red bulb for each house fire through the month of December.
The hope is, countywide, by following proper safety protocols regarding heating, cooking, electrical safety including holiday decorations and smoke alarms, no bulbs will turn red and all residents countywide will enjoy a safe and happy holiday season.
Fire officials and first responders have a few tips for keeping holiday decorations from being a hazard: If buying a real tree, get one that’s fresh and keep it
If buying a real tree, get one that’s fresh and keep it watered.
Use UL-rated lights for all decorations. Do not use indoor-rated lights outdoors. Turn them off when not at home.
Keep candles away from holiday trees or flammable items — or pass on using real candles at all.
HUNTING HOLIDAY MONEY? CHECK FLORIDA‘S TREASURE HUNT
Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis encourages all Floridians to see if the state is holding unclaimed property or money in their names at FLTreasureHunt.gov. At a time of year where everyone could use a little extra spending cash, and an unexpected check from the State of Florida could help make things a little brighter this year. It’s free to search your and your family’s names and only takes a couple minutes.
Often, held money is in the form of unpaid utility or rental deposits, unclaimed paychecks or insurance premiums.
