County program offers rental assistance to qualifying residents

Registration deadline Sunday

Osceola County residents who are facing homelessness may be eligible for 24 months of rental assistance through the Tenant-Based Rental Assistance Program. Applications for the program are open through Sunday, Jan. 19.

The program’s goal is to subsidize rent payments until the tenant is economically independent, and participants will be connected to case management services that promote self-sufficiency.

Qualified applicants must have a household income of 60% or below the Area Median Income, and they must have been a resident of Osceola County for at least 6 months.

Osceola County will conduct a lottery within seven business days of the application closing date to randomly identify a group of pre-applicants to proceed with the full application. Within 10 business days of lottery closing, Osceola County will contact the first 50 pre-applicants to come in the office to validate their preferences.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 10.9% of Osceola’s population in 2023 was in poverty. With an estimated population that year of 437,784, that means that 47,718 people were living in poverty in our county. The Osceola County Housing Office helps provide affordable, safe housing assistance through various programs. The TBRA program is a rental subsidy used to help individual households afford housing costs. Clients choose their housing, and the subsidy stays with the client (not the unit) if they move.

The TBRA program, administered by the Osceola County Housing and Community Services Department, will receive funding under Title II of the National Affordable Housing Act (1990) through the HOME Investment Partnership Program (HOME) under regulations and policies established by Osceola County, in conjunction with the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
