Orlando City extends historic unbeaten streak with 1-0 win over Portland

Orlando City SC achieved a milestone moment at Inter&Co Stadium Saturday, defeating the Portland Timbers 1-0, tying the club record with 12 consecutive games unbeaten in MLS play. It's the longest active streak in Major League Soccer this season.

Duncan McGuire's clinical 39th-minute finish proved decisive as the Lions (7-2-6, 27 points) climbed to fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings. After Portland cleared a dangerous Orlando attack, Eduard Atuesta demonstrated his playmaking quality by collecting the loose ball on the edge of the 18-yard box and threading a perfectly strong through ball behind the Timbers' defensive line. McGuire smacked it far post past helpless Portland goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau. The strike marked McGuire's second goal of the season and his 28th career goal for Orlando City across all competitions.

Atuesta's returned to the starting lineup after missing recent matches to record his third assist in a Lions jersey. His vision and technical ability were on full display throughout the opening period, as Orlando dominated proceedings with an energetic and tactically disciplined performance.

The tactical adjustments paid immediate dividends as Orlando controlled the tempo and created numerous scoring opportunities, proving they could pass the ball around effectively. Orlando's defensive unit also delivered another commanding performance, limiting Portland to just two shots on goal, helping goalkeeper Pedro Gallese secure the Lions' seventh clean sheet of the season, tying them for the most shutouts in MLS this year.

The backline of Robin Jansson, Rodrigo Schlegel, David Brekalo, and Alexander Freeman successfully neutralized Portland's attacking threats. The Timbers (6-4-5, 23 points) struggled to create meaningful chances against Orlando's well-organized defensive structure.

The victory improved Orlando's perfect record against Portland in downtown Orlando to 3-0-0.

Orlando's historic unbeaten streak will quickly face its next test when the team travels to face rivals Atlanta United FC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.

With momentum firmly on their side and confidence at an all-time high, the Lions appear well-positioned to continue their pursuit of both regular season success and that elusive first MLS Cup title.
