Despite the pandemic, 2021 was a record-setting year for the annual Kissimmee Mecum Auction, with $141 million in classic automobile and art sales this past January.
If you can’t wait for January to roll around again for the 2022 Kissimmee event, you can go to Orlando to scratch that itch at the Mecum Summer Special that begins Wednesday at Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center.
The Summer Special will offer an estimated 1,000 consignments through Sunday.
Just like the Kissimmee show, there are some high-end featured lots. Among those already confirmed is a 1969 Dodge Daytona NASCAR (Lot S142) driven by country music legend Marty Robbins at the National 500 in Charlotte, N.C., in 1970. Re-discovered in 2005, the car had a rotisserie restoration completed by Ray Evernham’s Big Iron Garage before being unveiled to the public 50 years later Talladega Speedway.
A one-of-one 1987 Porsche 930 Turbo Slantnose (Lot S93) is also slated to join the Summer Special auction lineup. The car was custom built by Porsche’s Special Wishes program and includes a rare 3.3L engine with a 4-speed transmission. The car sports a Guards Red exterior with a Champagne leather interior, including the dash.
Three Chevrolet Corvettes—a 1958 convertible (Lot S163), a 1963 split-window coupe (Lot S111.1) and a 2020 3LT convertible (Lot S143) that is the final 2020 Corvette produced — show the diversity in age, design and technology to be offered among the event’s expected 1,000-car lineup.
General Admission tickets are $30 at the door and online after July 27. Children 12 and under are free. Gates open daily at 8 a.m. for preview, and auctions begin at 1 p.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m. Thursday through Sunday.
Bidder registration is available online (details at Mecum.com) in advance and on-site at the auction for $200 and includes admission for two to each auction day. For those unable to attend in person, enhanced remote bidding options are also available, with options for both online and telephone bidding. The 2022 Kissimmee Mecum show is slated for Jan. 6-15, 2022.
