Week 1: Tohopekaliga wins big; other young squads made debuts on the road

In one of just two games played in Osceola County Friday -- five teams were road warriors in the regular-season opener, the Harmony Longhorns defense made a number of big plays on defense, making eight tackles for loss and recovering three fumbles.

But the offense couldn't capitalize and sustain drives on offense, and turned it over five times themselves, as Eustis scored on offense, defense and special teams in a 45-3 win. LaShawn Williams scored three times.

The Longhorns did have five scrimmage plays over 10 yards; Jeremy Hilliard, one of few starters who saw any snaps on last year's senior-laden offense, carried 11 times for 56 yards to lead Harmony.

Freshman kicker Brayden Buehler got Harmony on the board in the fourth quarrer with a 31-yard field goal.

"But we didn't sustain drives. We've got to take advantage of those big plays on defense," said Coach Nick Lippert, who made his regular-season coaching debut Friday.

"It's a long season. We'll be fine, these kids will grow."

Anthony Rodriguez, Moivee Roberts and Ian Brigham recovered fumbles.

In the other game in town, Tohopekaliga went to Liberty and dominated in a 56-6 win.
