An investigation into a deputy-involved shooting in Kissimmee Thursday is in the hands of the FDLE now after one of two Osceola County Sheriff's deputies shot and killed a man who reportedly pointed his own firearm at them.
The area around Remington Boulevard and Club Villas Lane was cordoned off for hours after the incident at around 3:40 p.m., when the Sheriff's Office said it several 911 calls of an armed male waiving a gun in the front yard of a home in the residential neighborhood. They encountered an older, white male with a firearm, and issued him numerous verbal commands to put down the gun. Instead of complying, the man pointed the gun at a deputy. Two separate deputies then fired at the man and struck him.
"Deputies, how they're trained, if you point a firearm at them, they're going to shoot you," Sheriff Marcos Lopez said in response to the incident. "We have an independent witness who said (the deceased suspect) fired first, but that is still being investigated."
CPR was performed on the man, but he could not be revived and was pronounced dead on the scene, with a firearm in his possession. No deputies were struck or hurt in the incident.
Neighbors said the victim was known as being an "always friendly" guy in a very friendly neighborhood.
Lopez said he's turned the investigation over to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for an independent review of the actions of deputies use of deadly force.
