In response to St. Cloud City Manager Bill Sturgeon’s recent announcement that he is retiring effective Sept. 2, the City Council voted last week to appoint Deputy City Manager Veronica Miller as the interim city manager, and named a new Assistant City Manager who those in Osceola County will be familiar.
Dave Tomek, who retired as the County’s Community Development Administrator at the end of March, spent 14 years there after over two decades of public service in Fort Myers, Maitland and outside his native St. Louis.
“I’m excited to be adding Dave to the team here at the City of St. Cloud,” Sturgeon said. “His experience and depth of knowledge will help our team elevate to an even stronger level of service for our residents. He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge that will help our team be stronger, particularly as we continue to face unprecedented growth throughout our area.”
Interviewed by the News-Gazette this week, Tomek said he’d work with the city on special projects, the all-hands-on-deck venture that’s the budget, and other government affairs where he’d be an “extra set of eyes.”
“I’ve been very impressed with what Bill and Veronica are accomplishing here,” he said. “There’s so much growth taking place here, which can bring about a lot of challenges. I’m excited to transition from such a great county to work with to a smaller city that is now grasping how to become bigger. The county grew a lot in the years I was there.”
Miller has been the city’s deputy manager for five years, and will celebration 19 years in total with St. Cloud later this year. She has served in growth management, public services, business administration and planning.
