For the News-Gazette

I really don’t know what was more ridiculous, Odell Beckham Jr. attempting to hijack the LSU post-game national championship celebration by trying to make it all about “him,” while handing out cash to the players in the locker room, or the feeble attempt to laugh it off by school officials who claimed the next day the cash was “fake.” As Chris Carter would say “C’mon Man”…

This OBJ thing is not a big deal. The school should have admitted the problem and said the money would be repaid and that would have been the end of it. To claim it was fake money was a bad look. Kudos for Tiger quarterback Joe Burrow for not playing along with the LSU charade by admitting the OBJ cash was real…

Just underwent the major expense of having new floors put in the house. I was worried about paying the $5K AMEX bill that came with it, until I received an incredibly well-timed email from a Mr. Jackson of the FBI Department (Mr. Jackson misspelled department, but I sure he was just in too big of hurry to let me know the good news). Apparently some scam artists in Africa were using my good name to swindle money from banks in that country. Fortunately, the perpetrators were caught, and the United Nations Compensation Program (UNCP for short) has determined that because my good name was besmirched by these scoundrels, I am entitled to $10.5 million in restitution that will be paid by this fund. All I have to do is send them my Social Security number, my bank account number and a money order for $295 to cover a processing fee (these transfers aren’t free you know) and BOOM, $10.5 million will be deposited in my account. I can only hope my readers who have been slandered by these scoundrels, will also be touched by the concerned and caring hands of Mr. Jackson…

Johnny Gilbert has been the studio host of Jeopardy since 1984 (he’s the guy who does the “This is Jeopardy” opening and then reads on the contestants). Incredibly, he is 95 years old, has been doing game shows since the 1950s, and is still going strong. He also earns $2 million per season for about five minutes of work a day—nice work if you can get it….

One of the great things about sports is its unscripted nature. San Francisco’s Raheem Mostert had the second best day for a running back in NFL playoff history, when he ran 29 times for 220 yards and four touchdowns against the Green Bay Packers. His history is absolutely amazing. A track star at New Smryna Beach High School, he was not a highly sought after football recruit. In four years at Purdue, he was mostly a return guy, but did manage to rush for 759 yards in four years. He went undrafted in the NFL. Starting in 2015, he was signed and cut (sometimes numerous times by the same team) by the Dolphins, Baltimore, Cleveland, New York Jets, Chicago, Philadelphia and San Francisco. Prior to 2019, he played in a total of 41 games, rushing for 297, and 1 touchdown over five years. And while he had somewhat of a breakout season in 2019, no one saw last Sunday coming. Will he be able to parlay that into a big contract or become a star? Who knows? He will be 28 by the start of next season, which is sort of old for an NFL running back. But one thing is for certain, for one day on a huge stage, Mostert did something that will be remembered for a long, long time….

True Story. Back in 1986, Florida State was interviewing Pat Kennedy for its basketball head-coaching job. Feeling he was going to be offered the job, Kennedy decided to rent a car to explore the Tallahassee area. At the airport rental counter, he was asked who is employer was. He replied “Iona College.” The counter lady asked, “Oh that’s nice, which one do you own?”

The Los Angeles City Council has passed a regulation asking major league baseball to strip the Astros of their World Series title and award it to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Not quite sure why they don’t think the New York Yankees wouldn’t have the same claim….

Although I wasn’t sure what and when the next opportunity would come for former Orlando Predators and Washington Redskins Head Coach Jay Gruden, I did know that he would try to make a move soon, rather than sit around and just collect the remainder of his Redskins contract. I worked with him for almost 10 years and knew he had a hard time sitting still for five minutes let alone 18 months. Not sure whether the Jacksonville situation is a great one, given the head coach barely survived getting let go himself, but I do know Jay and I do know he has a great offensive mind. The 2019 Jags season just got interesting for me…

When he was a senior in high school, Patrick Mahomes was drafted by the Detroit Tigers. Hmmm…just occurred to me the Detroit Tigers have drafted more Super Bowl quarterbacks than the Detroit Lions….

Y’all have a great week!
