Ohio transfer QB throws for 168, passes and runs for TDs in 47-7 win over Celebration
The Poinciana football team sent a message to the rest of its opponents – like Osceola High next week – in a 47-7 romp over the Celebration Storm in Friday’s season opener.
“Next week is one of the biggest games in Poinciana school history,” Poinciana head coach Taron Mallard said. “We’re ready. Man, we knew we were set for a winning season this year.”
It took two offensive plays for Poinciana to show what could be in store. Eagles’ quarterback Lucas Minenok’s second pass of the night was a 47-yard spiral to Jamarie Williams, who caught it at the 20-yard line and sprinted into the endzone to put Poinciana up 7-0. Minenok finished the game with 168 yards passing.
“It’s just, you know, trusting in our guys, trusting in the coaching, Minenok said of his effort. “We've been getting coached up all week. We were in the film room all week and we just took what they were giving us.”
Mallard is excited to see how good Minenok, a transfer who moved from Ohio, can be for the Eagles.
“Lucas is a guy that can put the ball on the money down the field and then also make every play, even with his legs,” Mallard said.
After a bad Celebration punt, Minenok threw a short pass to Rodney Mallet and then ran a keeper in from the 7-yard line to put the Eagles up 13-0. Later in the first quarter, Xaidyn Hill scored from 11 yards out to put Poinciana up 20-0.
In the second quarter, Williams returned a punt 45 yards for a touchdown. Williams also had a 47-yard run that came just short of a touchdown. Earlier in the period, Jamare Eugene scored from 4 yards out. Poinciana led 33-0 at the half.
“We work hard to complete stuff every day at practice,” Williams noted of the expectations of this Eagles team. “So, it's gonna execute when we get on the field.”
In the second half for Poinciana, Eugene had an 8-yard touchdown run and Aaron Reno scored from three yards out. The lone Celebration score was a 65-yard touchdown run by Brendan Feddon at the end of the third quarter.
“Keep your feet moving,” Eugene said of the key to his success on the field.” “Let nobody stop you. That's my motivation. That's my mindset.”
That also seems to be the mindset of Poinciana as they prepare to take on Osceola next week, a team the Eagles have never beaten
