Longtime county coach Dwayne Webb, 60, passes away

Dwayne Webb, a longtime football and weightlifting coach in Osceola County, passed away from a short bout with colon cancer Monday. He was 60 years old.

Webb had coached in the county for over 30 years, with stops at Osceola, St. Cloud, Poinciana and Gateway High. He had been at Gateway the last 10 years, coaching defensive backs as well as working with the Panthers’ girls weightlifting team, and coached basketball at some of his other stops. He was a PE teacher.

“Shakes me to the core,” GHS Coach Marlin Roberts said. “The kids respected him. We coached against each other in football and JV basketball, and then I talked him into coming over here.

"We had many good memories. I can think of long nights after some losses. We coached on some teams that didn’t have a lot of success, but he told me he’d get the kids into the weight room and get them stronger. That laid the foundation for us getting to the playoffs for the first time ever (2015, 2017-2018). He was a good soldier to lean on.”

Webb’s wife, Denise, is a teacher at St. Cloud Middle School. A GoFundMe account has been set up to raise funds for Mrs. Webb: https://www.gofundme.com/f/9au4sm-help-coach-beat-cancer?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=unknown&utm_campaign=comms_hyc9+9au4sm-help-coach-beat-cancer

“They (Cobblestone Courtyard in St. Cloud) had a spaghetti dinner benefit for him a couple weeks ago,” Roberts said. “That was the best I’d seen him.”

Arrangements and services have not yet been set up.
