Letter to the Editor — Kindness denied

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dear Editor:

JoAnn Colonna’s letter (April 6) attacking Dr. Jonathan Klate’s description of kindness (“Wokeness = Kindess, March 30) probably wouldn’t have been written but for Dr. Klate’s use of the term “woke”. That word has been adopted by (Gov. Ron) DeSantis as a weapon against those for whom it should mean freedom and equality. We need to judge actual political actions and consequences instead of trying to judge and act on everything by that poisoned word.

Colonna’s major complaint is that Klate has no vested interest in our state and consequently no standing to criticize. But, It’s okay, however for DeSantis to travel to other states, pushing his manufactured issues created at the expense of those who are already targets of prejudice, and forging the demise of our public school system by increased private tax-funded, barely- regulated private schools.

I believe I have a vested interest in any state, city or county, and any place on Earth. DeSantis has the right to those same interests, but his focus should be to work on the best interests of Florida, not on the occupancy of the White House.
