Angel Rivera, one of the men sentenced to life in prison for the murder of St. Cloud's Nicole Montalvo, recently died in prison, per Florida corrections records.
Per media reports, the family has confirmed Rivera, 66, Montalvo's father in law, died from COVID-19 complications.
Rivera and his son, Christopher Otero-Rivera, Montalvo's estranged husband, were both sentenced to life in prison on July 21 in the 2019 murder case. It took a jury 90 minutes to find the two guilty of second-degree murder, abuse of a body and tampering with physical evidence.
Judge Keith Carstens, in handing down both men's life sentences, ruled them jointly liable for the death of Montalvo, 33, who left behind a now 8-year-old son, Elijah, and said he couldn't overlook the pain inflicted on Montalvo's family.
In October 2019 she did not pick up her 8-year-old son from school, and the family reported her missing. Days later, investigators found her dismembered remains on the Rivera's property in St. Cloud, and Rivera and Otero-Rivera were subsequently arrested.
