Poinciana student gets JROTC award from Daughters of the American Revolution

Poinciana High School Junior, Shamari Sayles, was awarded the JROTC Award from Joshua Stevens Chapter NSDAR, Daughters of the American Revolution, at a ceremony on Monday, May 24 at the school.

Sayles is the school’s JROTC Public Affairs Officer and Unarmed Basic Drill Team Commander. Shamari received the award from past Regent, Debra Linn Idom Main; Chapter Historian, Ginny Brown and Chapter Corresponding Secretary, Linda Shumard.

Tanya and John Walton and Randy Sayles are Tamari’s proud parents. Tamari said, “I was inspired to join JROTC because both my father and stepfather are U.S. Army veterans.”

Shamari has been the commander for JROTC unarmed basic competition. She has volunteered with the school science fair and competes in Track & Field. She is an honor roll student whose favorite subject is science. In her spare time, Shamari has done modeling as well as studied dance of all kinds. Her favorites are hip hop and contemporary.

Sayles will be a senior at Poinciana High this fall. After high school graduation in 2022, she plans to go to college to study biological mechanics and go into a nursing program. Her ultimate goal is to go into the U.S. Navy nurse corps.

“Shamari demonstrated leadership skills and excelled in education. We felt she was very deserving of the award.” said Former Chapter Regent, Debra Linn Idom Main.
