'Ben and Jerry' move to Flamingo Island

Two capybaras that came to Gatorland from a sanctuary in St. Cloud this fall have moved to the park’s Flamingo Island.

They’ve grown from 15 to 50 pounds and guests will be able to check them out from a distance before an interactive encounter opens in the future.

One of the largest rodents in the world, capybara are herbivores and very social creatures, so they’re expected to get along with the flamingos, waterfowl, turtles and other critters on Flamingo Island.

“Capybara are partially aquatic mammals so this area allows for them to swim in a large pond where guests can see their natural behaviors and fun personalities,” explained Danielle Lucas, Director of Animal Care at Gatorland. “They still have another 10 to 20 pounds to grow.”
