Realtors, volunteers build wheelchair ramp for local veteran

Memorial Day weekend was an extra-special treat this year for one local disabled veteran.

Thanks to the efforts of the Realtors Care Committee, volunteers and committee members spent much of May 22 building a 32-foot wheelchair ramp at one of the Osceola Council on Aging’s residential properties.

The ramp project was funded by the Helping Homebound Heroes (HHH) grant provided by The Home Depot Foundation and Meals on Wheels America.

“We are honored to be supporting the Osceola Council on Aging,” said Justin Shrouder, Realtors Care Committee Chair. “When we heard one of their disabled veterans was having a difficult time getting in and out of his home, we knew we had to help. He bravely served our country, and we are proud to show our gratitude for his service.”

The purpose of the Care Committee is to seek, develop and promote opportunities for the Osceola County Association of Realtors and its members to be engaged in the community and to make a strong, positive impact.

“This ramp will greatly benefit this veteran and his wife, who has been serving as his caretaker,” HHH Coordinator Larry Belisle said. “We love having our volunteers come to our aid and get involved whenever possible.”

The Osceola Council on Aging, Inc. is a 501 (c) 3, non-profit, private charitable organization dedicated to providing services to enable independence and self-sufficiency for seniors, disabled adults, the disadvantaged and families in poverty.
