Sometimes, all it takes is one person to make a difference in a child’s life. Someone who shows up, believes in them, and reminds them that they are capable of great things.
For a third grader struggling to read, that person might be a volunteer who patiently helps them sound out a difficult word and celebrates when they finally get it right. For a high school student facing challenges at home or uncertainty about the future, it might be a mentor who offers encouragement, guidance, and a reminder that their dreams are worth pursuing.
At the Education Foundation Osceola County, we see firsthand how these simple moments can have a lasting impact.
Through our Bookmark Buddies program, volunteers are paired with third-grade students who need a little extra support with their reading skills. By spending just 30–45 minutes once a week at a local school, volunteers help students build their reading skills, gain confidence, and experience the joy of reading. It’s a small commitment of time that can make a lasting difference in a child’s life.
“Helping kids find their love for reading and improve their reading skills is a rewarding experience. I enjoy seeing their excitement and confidence grow. Being a part of this program is truly inspiring, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to make a difference.”— Isabella M. Bookmark Buddies Mentor Our Take Stock in Children program connects students from low-income households with caring volunteer mentors who provide encouragement, guidance, and a consistent source of support throughout their high school journey. Mentors connect with their students once a week, either in person at school or virtually through the Take Stock in Children app, making it easy to fit mentorship into a busy schedule.
“The connection I’ve built with my student is truly special and watching them grow and gain confidence has meant so much to me. It’s amazing how something as simple as showing up, listening, and offering encouragement can make such a difference in both of our lives.”—Brooke S.
