As of 5 p.m. the southbound lanes of Florida's Turnpike remain closed as Florida Highway Patrol investigates a deadly crash that killed a 56-year-old man and 65-year-old woman, both from Kissimmee.
Troopers say the Toyota FJ Cruiser the man was driving ran off the left side of the road for unknown reasons around 1:15 p.m. Tuesday at Mile Marker 240 just north of the St. Cloud exit. After striking the inside lane concrete barrier wall, troopers say the driver overcorrected and the vehicle rotated toward the right shoulder and struck a concrete barrier.
The passenger was pronounced dead on scene and the driver, who was ejected from the vehicle, died after being transported to HCA Florida Osceola Hospital via helicopter.
The crash remains under investigation, FHP says.
As of 5 p.m., delays on the southbound Turnpike stretched back to State Road 417 as all southbound traffic has been diverted onto U.S. 192.
