Boaters, fishermen and other outdoors-y types are familiar with Guy Harvey and his conservation efforts and foundation.
That foundation, the Guy Harvey Foundation, has recognized the School District of Osceola County as a Guy Harvey Conservation District for what the foundation called a “Commitment to environmental education through teacher professional development, experiential learning, and environmental leadership.”
“We are inspired by the work and commitment of the educators and schools in the Osceola School District that, through the Guy Harvey Cons e r v at i on Education Program, promote marine science and strengthen conservation education,” said Jessica Harvey, CEO of the Guy Harvey Foundation, the GHF is a the global nonprofit organization that supports scientific research, advances education, and drives advocacy that protects marine ecosystems, “To keep the ocean a place for exploration for generations to come.”
With the designation, SDOC educators can participate in regional professional development opportunities dedicated to environmental STEAM education, and through training become Guy Harvey Conservation (GHC) Educators who are then, “Empowered with recognition, knowledge, and resources they can share with students to foster environmental awareness and contribute to a sustainable future.”
The program offers supplies and grants for field trips enabling GHC Educators to enhance their teaching and instill conservation values in students. All the materials, classroom supplies, and educational content needed are provided to empower the next generation of stewards of ocean conservation.
“This designation reflects the dedication of our educators and the innovative work taking place in classrooms across Osceola County,” said Superintendent Dr. Mark Shanoff. “By investing in teacher professional development and experiential learning, we are inspiring students to think critically about environmental conservation and to lead with purpose for a more sustainable future.”
