Police: 85-year-old suspect in Remington shooting diagnosed with dementia

Osceola County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a shooting in the Remington neighborhood of Kissimmee, where police say they responded to verbal altercations between a son and elderly father in the last 10 days, including early Friday afternoon.

The suspect, an 85-year-old man who has been diagnosed with dementia, is being detained for the shooting of his adult son in his 50s, and is currently being interviewed by detectives. A determination will be made to either place the subject under arrest or in care at a mental health facility under the Baker Act, Osceola Sheriff's spokesperson Capt. Kim Montes said Friday.

Officials say deputies were called to a home on Westmoreland Circle, between the fifth and sixth holes of the golf course, at around 12:42 p.m. Friday. After arriving on scene, deputies located an adult male victim, later identified as the suspect's son, found to be shot. Both father and son resided at the house together, Montes said.

The father was identified as a suspect and was taken into custody without incident.

The shooting victim was airlifted to a hospital where he is in surgery for his injuries.
