A 75-year-old Orlando man was killed and two Kissimmee residents were hurt in a Saturday afternoon crash involving a LYNX bus on Wetherbee Road in south Orange County, the Florida Highway Patrol reported late Saturday night.
The incident occurred at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Wetherbee Road and Ile of Wright Drive, just east of Orange Blossom Trail. Troopers say the driver of a Tesla Model X, a 35-year-old Orlando man, was traveling eastbound on Wetherbee above the posted speed limit. In an attempt to maneuver around a slower vehicle, the driver lost control and crashed into the back of the ACCESS LYNX bus, which was in the left turn lane also headed eastbound.
According to their report, troopers say the bus overturned onto its left side from the impact, then rolled back upright onto the sidewalk and road.
The 75-year-old was taken to HCA Florida Osceola Hospital and pronounced dead. The Tesla driver was also taken to HCA Florida Osceola with serious injuries. The bus driver, a 48-year-old Kissimmee man, and another passenger, a 27-year-old Kissimmee man, were taken to hospitals with minor injuries.
ACCESS LYNX is an on-call service that provides door-to-door transportation to those with limited capacity who cannot use standard bus service due to disability.
It was the second fatal accident in 24 hours in Orange County involving a LYNX bus; a female pedestrian walked in front of a bus Friday night in West Orlando and was fatally struck, FHP said.
