Oak Street at John Young intersection improvements start Monday

March ushers in Spring – and a $3.34 million intersection improvement at a busy Kissimmee location.

The City of Kissimmee announced Friday is moving forward with an overhaul of the intersection of Oak Street and John Young Parkway. The work will begin Monday to accomplish, what city officials say, will be an enhancement of traffic flow, safety and accessibility for residents and commuters.

Work is expected to be completed in 2026, the city said. Crews will work daily on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Utility lines will be relocated first – so the early work will likely be dusty and dirty. Major road improvements will follow. Expect temporary lane closures and detours as work moves on; the city will have plenty of signage.

Among the upgrades included: Oak Street will be widened to include continuous through lanes and right and left-turn lanes (the right-turn-only lane on eastbound Oak Street will become a thru lane); milling, resurfacing, new pavement and drainage; upgraded sidewalks, curb ramps and detectable warning surfaces; improved traffic signals lighting, signage and pavement markings; and new landscaping and erosion control

Nearly all (95%) of the funding for the project is coming from the Florida Department of Transportation  and MetroPlan Orlando, with the city of Kissimmee contributing the small remaining cost.

Details on this and other major city projects will be provided online at kissimmee.gov/progress.
