Kissimmee resident killed by 'celebratory gunfire' overnight, police say

Kissimmee Police are reporting that a person died overnight Wednesday in the Lakeside neighborhood by what they call "A victim struck by celebratory gunfire."

According to a police statement, officers responded to a residence on Gull Court off of Lakeside Drive just west of Simpson Road just after midnight. A victim -- police have not yet said if it was a male or female -- was found with "injuries consistent with a gunshot wound" and was immediately transported to a local hospital, where the victim was pronounced dead.

Kissimmee Police provided no other details, but said detectives are investigating to determine the circumstances.

Police are quick to discourage anyone from using gunfire to ring in the New Year or any other holiday or celebration, as rounds fired in to the air must fall back to the earth and do so with as much or more force as when they leave the gun.
