New Year's Day is a federal holiday, meaning government and utility offices will be closed Wednesday and will re-open Thursday. Curbside trash collection will still occur, including bulk items if Wednesday is your day for that. Aside from that, most retail businesses, especially the chains, will be open today.
New Year's Day is also the traditional day for the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade and Philadelphia's Mummers Parade (Google it, check it out, you'll be glad you did).
