Frequent toll road drivers save $247 million, FDOT says

Drive enough on Florida’s toll roads, get half off your tolls; seems like a heck of a deal for having a transponder.

Florida’s Toll Relief Program, which was in place much of 2022 to provide financial relief to Florida’s commuters, returned in April 2024. The Florida Department of Transportation reports nearly $247 million in Toll Relief credits have been issued, benefiting over a million Florida drivers each month.

Those with at least 35 monthly toll transactions receive an automatic 50% credit to their account. This latest version of the program runs through March 2025. SunPass customers with high regular use were already saving an average of 25% on tolls.

Just about all local toll roads qualify for the plan—Florida’s Turnpike, Osceola Parkway, Poinciana Parkway, State Roads 417 and 429, and the I-4 Express lanes in Orlando. The Toll Relief Program was designed to reduce toll expenses for the state’s frequent travelers and “Helping to alleviate the cost of commuting and support the economic well-being of Florida’s residents,” an FDOT release said.

“Florida commuters have saved nearly one-quarter of a billion dollars thanks to Governor Ron DeSantis’ Toll Relief Program,” said FDOT Secretary Jared W. Perdue. “Florida families and small businesses are seeing extra savings at the end of each month, and we look forward to continue the savings through next year.”

The 2023 Toll Relief Program credited customers approximately $470 million, giving the average driver about a $400 savings to those with transponders and have accounts in good standing participating in the program.
