County property tax millage rate staying put for '24

Osceola County’s property tax rate is slated to remain at 8.2308 as officials begin the process of putting together its Fiscal Year 2024 budget.

The millage rate — a ‘mill’ represents $100 in property taxes for every $100,000 of value — will remain at 8.2308 mils this year, the county announced Monday.

That rate has not changed in 13 years. To calculate the property tax, multiply the assessed value by the mill rate and then divide by 1,000.

The proposed recommended FY24 budget is currently about 25 percent smaller than FY23, at about $1.693 billion. But it currently does not include estimates for continuing capital and grant projects which will be included for the first public budget hearing on Sept. 7, the first chance the public will have to give input on the FY24 budget and proposed millage and rates.

“The Budget represents a continued effort to provide a high level of service to Osceola County residents, business owners, and visitors, along with an investment in supporting infrastructure and public safety,” County Manager Don Fisher wrote in his overview of the proposed budget. “The County continues to be positioned well financially to meet the challenges associated with continued growth and changing economic conditions while maintaining millage rate stability over the past 13 years.”

The budget includes requests from Constitutional offices such as the Sheriff’s Office, which is seeking an increase of $9.9 million that includes salary adjustments to be competitive in the market and retain personnel, as well as a request to fund new civilian positions.

“The County Manager's presented plan not only addresses our immediate needs, but also upholds the fiscally responsible policies that have proven successful for the past 13 years," Osceola Commission Chairwoman Viviana Janer said in a county release. "While our revenues reflect the remarkable growth happening within the County, the rising demand for services to match this growth remains a perpetual challenge.

“I am confident in our Strategic Plan and our efforts in crucial areas such as transportation and infrastructure, public safety, senior care, resident career enrichment, affordable housing options, and economic development”
