Noise is not music
Dear Editor:
We salute the Kissimmee city fathers for creating a noise ordinance that hopefully will bring back some sanity to our residents. The latest trend in what some would call “music” has been deadly to our health including hearing loss, cognitive impairment, and disruptions in our heart rates. Has no one noticed that most of the dangerous drivers on the road have pulsating sound blasting from their open windows that can be heard blocks away? I would venture to say these drivers are already impaired and that exposing young children to these booming beats is truly child abuse.
Is there a restaurant anywhere that does not force screaming background “music” down our throats? How can anyone enjoy a meal when you have to yell at your companion across the table to be heard? We have asked some servers to turn down or off the noise. Some have obliged, some have “corporate policy” as an excuse not to. I looked forward yesterday to a quiet lunch at our big chain seafood restaurant — it didn’t happen. The “background” noise was agitating and when my husband ordered his normal drink, a Pepsi, he was told both Pepsi and Coke were unavailable! We left sad, agitated and hungry.
Many years ago, a classmate of our son told us of attending a middle school dance and having to huddle with her friends at the other end of the gym to keep away from the excruciating band sound. Has no one learned yet? My husband and I have attended Christmas parties over the years given by a good friend and business associate. Each year the music offered has become louder; there is no conversation possible. This year we left early, both with headaches and me in tears. I don’t understand.
