Property tax refund for owners put out by ’22 hurricanes — here’s info

Was the house that you own ever unlivable for at least a 30-day stretch thanks to Hurricanes Ian or Nicole in 2022? If so, Osceola County Property Appraiser’s Office has a program that may make you eligible for a partial refund of 2022 property taxes.

County Property Appraiser Katrina Scarborough has announced that a document, titled “A Florida Homeowner’s Guide: Property Tax Relief for Hurricanes Ian and Nicole” and an application are located on the Osceola County Property Appraiser’s Office website (https://www.property-appraiser.org/forms/).

The state’s definition of “’uninhabitable’ in this case is: “The loss of use and occupancy of a residential improvement for the purpose for which it was constructed resulting from damage to or destruction of, or from a condition that compromises the structural integrity of, the residential improvement which was caused by Hurricane Ian or Nicole during the 2022 calendar year.””

The deadline to file is April 3. Applicants can receive and fill out an application at the Property Appraisers’ office (2505 E. Highway 192, in the complex at Partin Settlement Road) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the week.

Residents with questions can use the LiveChat function on the website, email info@property-appraiser.org, or call the office at 407-742-5000.
