After Memphis police Friday release body cameras and other footage from the deadly arrest of Tyre Nichols -- five officers were charged with murder on Thursday in his death -- reactions began coming in from law enforcement leaders, including Kissimmee police chief Jeff O'Dell in a tweet.
"We extend our thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Tyre Nichols, and the entire Memphis community. The egregious conduct demonstrated by these former police officers is beyond disturbing, and can never ever be tolerated in our profession," O'Dell wrote around 8:30 p.m. Friday evening.
According to about an hour's worth of video released Friday (warning, some of the video is graphic and features adult language), police made an original traffic stop on Nichols for reckless driving. They attempt to tase and handcuff him before he runs away. A second video, taken later after Nichols was apprehended, shows as many as four officers kicking and hitting Nichols with a baton while demanding Nichols' produce his hands. They stand him up briefly, then he falls to the ground, and he is dragged to the side of a police car while sitting on the ground. Some 20 minutes later, paramedics and an ambulance arrive on scene. In the last of the four videos, police describe how Nichols fled and resisted arrest.
