Bacon the Bulldog — Sheriff’s (cute) face of anti-bullying

Who doesn’t love bacon?

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, and Sheriff Marcos Lopez, surely loves Bacon.

We’re not talking the breakfast food, but Lopez hopes that school children will take to Bacon, the year-old English Bulldog, who was introduced Thursday as the mascot for the outfit’s anti-bullying campaign.

It was a part of a holiday adoption event, “All I Want for the Holidays is a Home,” at which Osceola County Animal Services offered low-cost pet adoptions that came with accessories for feeding, and entry into a raffle sponsored by PetSmart. Thursday’s rough weather did little to keep prospective new (and repeat) pet owners away.

The name “Bacon”, fitting for the meaty little pug, was revealed at the event.

“For Christmas, we just want to give animals a home. Like a lot of people in Osceola County. I am definitely an animal lover, so I snapped up this little guy so nobody else could,” Sheriff Lopez said. “I thought he could help children who may be being bullied relate.

“We have a lot of the therapy dogs. Bacon can help take the anxiety of being bullied away so we they can talk about it. We’re thinking of making a coloring book about him, and other ways to make him a positive reinforcement tool.”

As for other positive things, the Sheriff presented an $1,800 donation to Animal Services at the event.

While the adoption event lasted for one day. Animal Services Director Kim Staton said the Animal Services location is as much about serving our animal friends as it is adopting them.

“We’d like for folks to come out, even if they don’t adopt,” she said. “Who knows, they might want to volunteer and help out in some other way.”
