FHP: South Florida man killed on southbound Turnpike Monday after colliding with trailer in traffic

A 20-year-old South Florida man was killed on Florida's Turnpike south of St. Cloud Monday morning when his vehicle collided with a semi-truck with trailers, Florida Highway Patrol reports.

Around 7 a.m., the semi-truck was stopped for traffic ahead in the right southbound lane at Mile Marker 232, between the Three Lakes Toll Plaza and Canoe Creek service plaza. The driver of the other vehicle, a Toyota Corrolla, failed to stop for traffic ahead, FHP said, and swerved from the left lane to avoid a collision, entered the right lane, and collided with the rear of the trailer.

The man, from Coral Springs, was pronounced dead on scene. The trailer driver, a 72-year-old St. Cloud man, was not injured and remained on scene.

The accident created a roadblock for several hours, with southbound traffic being forced to exit onto U.S. Highway 192. That road block was cleared around 12:30 p.m.

The crash remains under investigation, FHP said.
