Letters to the Editor -- Call for respect in national abortion debate

Dear Editor:

The nearly 50-year debate in regards to abortion rages on, and has intensified with the Supreme Court’s recent decision.

I consider myself prolife, but I also believe an abortion may be needed in the very rare cases when the life of the mother is in danger from her pregnancy. I do not support abortion-on-demand, which accounts for the vast majority of abortion procedures.

Putting politics and religion aside for just a moment, I would like to ask those pro-choice people to look at an ultrasound or sonogram of an abortion taking place. Then, look at the end product of the abortion procedure. Is it a human being? This is the foundational question that must be answered in regards to this heated issue.

A recent letter to the editor on July 7 (“A Short-Term Victory for Women’s Health Rights”) labeled the recent Supreme Court decision as an assault on women deciding their fate; but at the same time, the pro-life crowd calls the abortion procedure itself an assault on children in the womb.

Both sides of the debate can really dig in their heels and sometimes get disrespectful to others as they “fight for their cause.” In the midst of our country’s great divide over many issues, can we not treat one another with dignity and respectfully disagree? Can we not do to others what we would like for them to do with us?

I don’t mind people disagreeing with my opinion, but, please, do it respectfully.
