Uncover the hilariously tacky history of National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day and its spectacular, sparkly origins this Friday, Dec. 19!
The official holiday, formally established in 2011 according to National Day Calendar, was created by ugly Christmas sweater lovers, who wanted a dedicated way to lighten up the busy holidays and proudly display their absurdly tacky threads.
That site stated this tradition encourages wearers each year to shop, craft, and compete to outugly the previous season with one mission in mind-to festoon garments with enough glitter and ribbon to ensure maximum, memorable tackiness.
From refined cheer to radical revolution, the history of the “ugly” sweater is an enlightening journey through American fashion. Despite their modern popularity, ugly Christmas sweaters originated in the 1950s as “Jingle Bell Sweaters,” a subtle and tasteful way to express holiday cheer. These garments featured traditional Christmas symbols but were knitted in muted colors and refined patterns to fit the sophisticated, post-war fashion standards.
However, the redefined look was short lived. The University of Fashion stated that the counterculture movements of the 1960s and 1970s radically changed fashion perception, bringing in an era of bold patterns, psychedelic colors, and unconventional designs.
The Christmas sweater was swept up in this vibrant revolution, shedding its traditional muted look for a much more striking and colorful aesthetic.
The transformation culminated in the decade of excess: the 1980s. The University of Fashion states that this period marked the end of modesty, with sweaters embracing unapologetic extravagance. Glitter, sequins, and pom-poms adorned every surface, the once-modest snowman became bedazzled, and the simple snowflake transformed into a dazzling disco ball of knitwear.
This beloved pastime continues to this day and celebrates across the United States of America.
