Run for hearts: Kissimmee 5K is Saturday

Some downtown streets will close at 7 a.m. — event parking available at SunRail garage

Valentine’s Day’s just a few days away, so it’s time for an annual tradition that doesn’t involve flowers or chocolate, but it does have everything to do with hearts — yours and others’.

Presented by Kissimmee Main Street, the Kissimmee 5K will be held Saturday at 7:30 a.m., through the streets of downtown and along the city’s picturesque lakefront. While there’s prizes on the line for the fastest runners in each age group, the event supports and raises money for the American Heart Association, to further awareness for heart healthiness and encourage Kissimmee residents to live a more active lifestyle.

As part of one of the area’s more low-key 5Ks, strollers are welcome, and runners and walkers of all ages and abilities are encouraged to dress up in the holiday theme, with costume contests for Cutest Cupid, Prettiest Pair, and Care Club for large groups. Runners will be taken aback by the serenity of Lake Tohopekaliga as a morning fog rolls in, and the course passes by some of downtown’s most historic homes as well as shopping and dining venues — many of which will be open for a post-race breakfast or brunch.
