BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Submitted by Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church
Rev. Remer Baker, Jr., pastor of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church of Kissimmee, was called into the ministry at the age of 16 in June 1969, and has been a Pastor for 43 years.
Prior to his current Pastoral position he was Pastor of 2nd Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church of Sanford. In addition, Pastor Baker is a “Revival Evangelist Preacher.” He is a bible believing, bible preaching and bible teaching Preacher.
Kissimmee born and bred, Baker graduated from Osceola High School, Temple Baptist College, Florida Seminary, Valencia Community College, and Florida Bible College. Pastor Baker also received an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Berean Christian College and Seminary. Vice President of First South Florida Congress #2 (Local Congress).
His community involvement runs just as deep. He recruited black teachers and administrators for Osceola County schools. Community member Deloris McMillon was named assistant principal at Osceola High, and later principal at Parkway Middle School, due to his persistency to challenge the lack of black educators.
He and the late Druvonda Woods challenged local government to make changes of the injustices of the Black Community. Affirmative Action Committees would be established to monitor injustice and address necessary changes. He is also a member of the NAACP 5121-B Osceola Branch.
The pastor was also involved in a landmark decision and lawsuit filed against the City of Kissimmee (Baker vs. Kissimmee) in 1981. Plaintiffs, a class of “all black citizens of the City of Kissimmee who reside in predominately black neighborhoods in the City of Kissimmee”, maintained that they had been unlawfully denied their right to municipal services, including the street paving and street resurfacing and maintenance, in violation of their rights secured under the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution. After several count appearances, the lawsuit was awarded to plaintiffs to pave and resurface streets.
At Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, Pastor Baker is known for his focus of saving lost souls by the “Plan of Salvation” which is through Jesus Christ.
Pastor Baker has been married to Barbara Baker 48 years. Their five children are Joshua, Lashonda, Remer III, Rachel, and Caleb.
