The Opportunity Center, which works to empower individuals with developmental disabilities in Osceola County by assisting with employment, training and community integration, will hold its first-ever “Wings of Opportunity” Gala on Saturday April 27, at 6 p.m. at the Kissimmee Civic Center.

The center has been around since 1970, when it was established by concerned citizens and parents as a training facility for individuals with developmental disabilities in Osceola County. But, Executive Director Kristen Lafferty said many people don’t know that it exists or that it helps lift up those who just need a hand.

“Most people don’t think about that unless they have a family member like the ones we support,” she said.

While the sold-out gala is being touted as, “An evening of elegance, inspiration, and community spirit, aimed at raising vital funds to support the Center’s diverse programs,” it will also serve as a chance to increase its awareness in the community.

Keynote speaker Jana Shelfer, formerly known as Jana Banana from Real Radio 104.1 FM “Phillips Phile” show, will bring her extraordinary story of resilience and positivity to the evening. A three-time Paralympian, gold and bronze medalist, and a national media personality with her own podcast, “Living Lucky,” Jana embodies the spirit of overcoming adversity and embracing life’s challenges with courage and humor.

“That’s going to be a big thing in our first year,” Lafferty said. “We did an event a few years ago. Fundraising is now going to be a big part of what we do.”

As for what it does, The Opportunity Center features Adult Day Training, designed to—and tailor-made for each individual—support adults with developmental disabilities in daily routines, It addresses areas of need identified on that individual’s support plan.

“We try to help each individual meet their goals for independence. It looks different to different people,” Lafferty said. “We are not just changing lives; we are redefining what it means to live fully and independently.”

For those with more specialized needs, motor sensory activities are provided for more personal care, and transportation can be provided to the Center and to work sites and community outings.

All proceeds from the gala will directly benefit The Opportunity Center’s vital programs and services. For more information on sponsorship opportunities, visit www.theopportunitycenter.net/our-gala or contact Lafferty at klafferty@theopportunity center.net.
